Its simply baffling that the House Republican leadership has now changed the subject to granting amnesty to millions of people who are illegally in the country.
My constituents know I have always been an advocate of legal immigration. The United States is a melting pot of various nationalities, and this has contributed to our overall success as a nation.
The Senates Gang-of-Eight immigration bill goes about immigration reform exactly backwards. First they seek to legalize at least 11 million people illegally here now and then trust the Obama administration to secure the border later. We should have learned our lesson from the 1986 bill that provided legal status or amnesty, but the promised border security was never accomplished, which has led us to another amnesty or legal status bill today. We cannot let that happen again.

I agree and have for years.
Just put in e-verify and give jail time to employers that knowingly employ illegals.
They’ll go home.
There’s no point in talking about immigration reform till the border is truly secure.
Secure the borders like grownups, not children wearing suits. Halt ALL immigration, legal or otherwise. Arrest and deport by the millions as they pass through “the system”. That includes current prison populations, minor traffic infractions, employment background checks, etc. Anything less is national suicide, and letting BIG unskilled labor dictate the course of your nation for the next few centuries.
Border security was legislated in the 1986 fiasco, and a fence was legislated in 2006. In both cases, these provisions were ignored. Why should we believe Congress will secure the border this time?
Build a wall. Show us a secure border. The we can talk about immigration reform.
Stopping access to employment and letting agents enforce immigration
laws are the only ways to stop illegal immigration.
At Irv’s Pawn Shop.
No leeway.
Exactly, b4its2late! This is the problem no one on the Republican side of the Senate seems to want to acknowledge, let alone grapple with. Yet they seem to be having a wonderful Kumbayah moment with their Democrat opponents though (who want to see the GOP electorally dead forever, which is the real purpose of this bill).
Senator Corker seems to be positioning himself as some kind of hero of "national healing" here. As if the "feelings" of 11 million illegal aliens are more important than the "feelings" of the American people who actually live here.
What this Corker amendment really boils down to is a Trojan Horse. Speaker Boehner has declared that he will not bring the Senate measure now incorporating the Corker amendment before the House without the support of a the GOP majority of the House. But he is waffling on whether he would feel constrained to bring an amendment to that bill rising in the Senate, or a Conference Committee reconciliation bill, without majoritarian support from his own party in the House.
Why doesn't he just return the House gavel to Madame Pelosi, and complete the suicide of the GOP which he seems to be so hard at work enabling???
A simpler and more practical approach is to just amend the tax code to charge a higher FICA and Medicare tax on employers who are found to have non-citizen employees. From the employers point of view making sure your employees are citizens, or have specific authority to work in the USA will be a no-brainer, because nobody will want to be on the hook for the extra taxes and penalties. And we know the IRS will track them down since they have the data, and will want the money.
The higher cost of non-citizen employees will discourage the hiring of illegal immigrants since they will be more expensive to the business than legal immigrants or citizens. And since its a tax issue, there isn't even a need for e-verify, since employers will figure out how to determine if an employee is safe to hire at the lower tax rate since its their checkbook on the line if the employee turns out to be a non-citizen.
