He seeks to divide.
This is the beginning of his effort to divide Americans of Judeo-Christian values against each other.
He is trying to chisel a gap, big enough to insert a wedge, in order to isolate Catholics from all others who hold these values.
He sees that there can be a weakness in our relations with each other and he is trying to manipulate it.
After Catholics, who will be next? Evangelicals? Lutherans? Episcopals? Methodists? Baptists?
The sure thing is that SOMEBODY will be next.
Divided, we are weak. United, we are strong.
No, he will unite them by giving them a common enemy.

I think Obama is hostile to genuine Catholicism or genuine Protestantism, and is only comfortable around types like Pelosi and Biden who don't let their religious affiliation interfere with advancing the Democratic/Progressive agenda. But to give him the benefit of the doubt his remarks were based on ignorance rather than malice.
I recall when Romney went to Europe in 2012 the media tried to turn anything he said into a gaffe. When Obama goes to Europe and makes a fool of himself, it didn't happen as far as the media are concerned.
