Vince Flynn, RIP

Vince Flynn was a wonderful writer and an always welcome, entertaining, intelligent, funny and informative guest. On the occasion he came and spent three hours in studio there followed a long and funny dinner with his friends and mine at a local eatery where he held forth with all the style and story-telling one would expect from the creator of Mitch Rapp.

During that first, long interview, in February of 2009, Vince talked about his deeply Catholic roots, about his wonderful parents and their faith, about love for his high school St Thomas, and about his faith. The full transcript is here.

In subsequent interviews –here, here, here and here– Vince would never hesitate to discuss his world view, deeply formed by his Catholicism. In our last on-air conversation, Vince declared again about his faith and his illness that “[y]ou and I have talked about this before. This disease has brought me closer to my faith, which I think adds a lot of clarity to a person’s life and their mission. And it has taught me definitely what is most important, you know, my faith, family and friends. And in a way, it has allowed me to simplify my life in a very nice, beautiful way.”

I will ask Duane to post the audio of that first interview below for fans of Vince so they can hear him, in great health, talking about the life and family he loved so much, the country he treasured and and about how he went about his work.

Vince will be missed most, of course, by his wife, children and family and by tens of millions of readers across the world, but especially by the warriors who see themselves in the Rapp series, and who understand

Had no idea he'd succumbed to his illness. I'm so behind on current events these days it's bewildering. He was a damn enthralling storyteller and a very fine man. Each morning when I awake a copy of Protect And Defend greets me.

I read it a fer piece back and never stashed it on my bookshelf; his paperback just remains there on my hutch where I placed it after finishing it one night when I just couldn't close it up before reaching the end. RIP

Oh, no. I didn’t realize he was in such bad shape. He gave me many hours of enjoyment and showed us what trouble is around us in the world.

I will miss his work. I will miss Mitch. He bent and broke the rules and got the job done that no on else could.

One thing that might cheer up fans - one more of his books is coming out in October.
