Today is also Mercury’s closest approach to Venus in the evening sky—Venus is maybe 40 times brighter. They should be about 2 degrees apart in the west just after sunset. The two bright stars a little higher are Pollux and Castor in Gemini. I haven’t been able to see them the past several nights because of clouds or haze, but Mercury should be about as bright as those two stars.
