Moderate Candidate Wins Iran's Presidential Vote By FARNAZ FASSIHI
BEIRUTHassan Rohani, the candidate backed by the opposition and reformist political factions, was declared the winner in Iran's presidential vote, giving a decisive victory to Iranians calling for change.
Iran's interior minister, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, said at a press conference Saturday in Tehran that Mr. Rohani had obtained more than 50% of more than 36 million votes cast in Friday's election.

Conservative candidates did poorly in vote counts so far, especially the candidates perceived to be the closest to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The current nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, ranked fourth and Ali Akbar Velayati, a former foreign minister, was fifth. Mohsen Rezaei, the former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, who made the economy his top campaign issue, ranked third. The votes for all three men are below 13% so far.
Iran analysts and media pundits had said that if Mr. Rohani wins with a large margin, it should serve as wake-up call for Mr. Khamenei and his circle of conservative advisers that their hard-line policies ranging from the standoff over the nuclear issue to the dire state of the economy have been rejected by the majority of the population.

“Wins”? He was placed there, just like Obama, it’s all Orwellian. Why is the media acting stupid?
Moderate maybe compared to “Supreme Leader” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei?
That and a nickle buys a nice hot cup of JACK SQUAT!
Khameini is the absolute ruler, elections are a “dog and pony show.”
Mohammed’s Dictionary defines “moderate” as “only 95% certifiably insane”
A moderate is one that believes a head cutting an infidel should be quick and painless, as opposed to long and painful.
Sure, he’s “moderate.” I can see it. He prefers to use a sharp sword when beheading infidels.
it should serve as wake-up call for Mr. Khamenei and his circle of conservative advisers that their hard-line policies ranging from the standoff over the nuclear issue to the dire state of the economy have been rejected by the majority of the population.
As our esteemed X SOS once said,
“At this point what difference does it make?”
The “majority” of the Pop don’t mean diddly to Khamenei
and his ilk.
That’s like saying Trotsky was a moderate communist.
I’m really sick and tired of the left-wing media calling fanatical Muslim terrorists “conservative.” There’s nothing conservative about it.
Funny that the terrorists always seem to be holding hands with the leftists, if they would just bother to look.
Because Muslims and Communists agree on at least two issues: all power to the state, its rulers and propagandists, and no freedom for the little guys.
Don't fully dismiss the youth leading the way for a change in attitude in Iran, at least incrementally.
Does this mean that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is out?
Did you read about the joke format of the first Iranian presidential debate?
“London, Asharq Al-AwsatIranian state-run television was accused of intentionally seeking to humiliate the presidential candidates in their first live group debate.
The debate took place on Friday afternoon and saw all 8 candidates asked to sit alongside each other and answer questions in a quiz-style format. The candidates were only granted 90 seconds to answer, and in some cases were even offered multiple choice answers or only permitted to provide yes or no answers.”
...
“MP Ahmad Tavakolli, who twice ran as a presidential candidate in 1989 and 1993, expressed surprise at the debate format, saying that this served to degrade the [Iranian] public and the Islamic republic, according to Khabar Online.
I am shocked that the candidates tolerated such a humiliating format and did not walk out of the studio, Tavakolli added.”

& this gem from another article:
‘In honor of the dear people of my country I will sit here, but I will answer none of your test questions, said Aref, gesticulating with his pen towards the moderator standing in front of an image of Khamenei.
I am a patient person and I can tolerate a lot, added Rezaie. With these repetitive, discontinuous, short, one-to-three minute answers, the people are being harmed and the eight people up here are being insulted.’
Did you read about the joke format of the first Iranian presidential debate?
No, but I saw the ones here and it was enough to make
me cry...
Yep. Asking for asylum in Hong Kong!
Yes, Ahmadinejad is out. But the ‘moderate’ who won was one of two candidates backed by the ruling clerics, so he may not be much of an improvement. Otoh, the rest of the contenders were ‘hardliners’, so his victory is a hopeful sign, however slight.
If Republicans learned nothing from the Candy Crowley debacle, there is no hope. For years the GOP has submitted to debates entirely moderated by leftist activists. If that doesn’t finally change, ‘the party of stupid’ is too kind a characterization.
I’m-a-dinner-jacket is out, technically, but not gone, by a long shot.
Well that may be, but at least we don't have to listen to Ahmanutjob any more.
Isn't a moderate muslim one who wants only to cut your head half off?
