I live in an area where there are some intel training schools and a grad school for espionage and ALL of them do that also.
Crazy?

When I got my first laptop at work with a camera, the first thing I did was put tape over the cmera. The external camera on my home computer is only plugged in when I’m using it.
Likewise with the microphone.

Black electrical tape works the best and won’t leave adhesive when removed. I’ve been doing this for years even with my iPhone and iPad. Electrical tape is cheap. Privacy is priceless.

At this point — subject to change — in spite of the hard evidence that has surfaced lately, it’s my belief that the concern over “big brother spying” is more paranoia than justified fear of a real danger.
Then again, as Intel’s Andrew Grove wrote: “Only The Paranoid Survive”. :-)

"....putting masking tape over the unused outlets in the house...."
That's foolish - you need the right tool for the right job - that's why they make electrical tape....
