A man who whipped a Muslim convert as a religious punishment for drinking alcohol was sentenced Friday to at least 16 months in jail.
Wasim Fayad, 45, was convicted earlier this year of the 2011 attack on Christian Martinez. Sydney Central Local Court Magistrate Brian Maloney sentenced Fayad, who had been Martinezs spiritual mentor, to a maximum of two years in jail for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Intentionally misleading headline by the AP. The AP knows that many people don't read the article, but instead skim headlines and form an opinion on what they think happened based on the headline words. This headline creates the impression that an innocent Muslim got whipped by an Australian (read: white guy) in a case of Islamophobia. In reality, it was a Muslim who was doing the whipping.
Three other Muslims helped. They didn’t go to jail, though. I’m surprised the “spiritual leader” went to jail, too.
How about just use their names?
