Actually, the position of “political officer” has been around for years in the US Military. In the US Army it’s called the Equal Opportunity (EO) Representative. The EO Rep is the enforcer of all things politically correct and “Diversity” is her watchword.
In the Army a unit commander fears only three people; His rater, JAG Officers and EO Reps. Not necessarily in that order.
