President Barack Obama, speaking on Friday after a presentation on the health-care law, said that "nobody is listening to your telephone calls," in reference to the National Security Agency's programs that monitor communications.
He said a program monitoring U.S. citizens takes numbers but not content or names of the users, and the program monitoring the Internet is targeted only toward those who are overseas. He said the "modest" encroachments on privacy are the worth the trade-off on fighting terrorism.

No one is listening to you cellphone calls. We just know where you were when you called, who you’re calling, where they’re located, the duration of the call, the people who are using cellphones in your proximity, who they’re calling...

Obama says he increased some of the “safeguards” on the programs after taking office. And he believes they help his administration stop terrorist attacks.
Why can’t they figure out how to use all that massive information
to stop telemarketers from violating the federal “Do Not Call List”?
