There’s debate about that even- it’s claimed he injured himself accidently (soem say he accidently grazed himself with a bullet, others say he tripped and cut himself() but basically it wasn’t much more than a scratch if I remember right, yet he was isued a purple heart strictly for political purposes later on- He must have whiend his heart out till he got his purple medal- they probably gave it to him just so he’d shut up
