Odd story - I was lying on the floor of our family room reading this book when I heard a cracking noise. Had just enough time to look up and see a large tree fall right past the window . . . squashed part of our deck and obliterated our Weber grill, but nobody was hurt.
Nothing in the book about 'why trees fall down' but it struck me as funny.

My wife and I were sitting on our deck back in the 90’s and watched as a neighbor’s huge, aged but perfectly healthy oak tree just toppled over.
We had had a lot of rain previously and the ground was saturated. The tree had no ‘tap root’ and it just fell over............

——just like people out for a stroll and they get killed by a tree branch falling on them...you just never know when your time is going to be up...or if you’re near the wrong tree at the wrong time-must be the planet fighting back ;)

The tree must’ve hated that grill.

We were on a canoe trip in the Adirondacks years and years ago, we were going to climb Ampersand Mountain, we were camped on Norway Island in Middle Saranac Lake, as we were walking the trail between the Lake and Route 3, a 3-4’ diameter tree decided to pick that exact moment to fall over...I have never been so stunned in my life...
