I think it is appropriate for the media to say he was an alleged intruder.
After all, it is within the realm of possibility for a person to invite someone into their home, get into an argument, shoot him, and then claim he was an intruder and the shooting was in self-defense.
It’s pretty unlikely, but it is possible, so it’s appropriate to say “alleged intruder” up to the point where the relevant authorities confirm that the dead guy was a perp instead of a victim.
