Congress Probing Chief Counsel’s Office in Washington in IRS Scandal
National Review Online ^ | June 3, 2013 | Eliana Johnson

Congressional investigators are probing the highest echelons of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C., in connection with the agency’s targeting of conservative groups, according to documents obtained by National Review Online. Those documents, provided by an IRS employee who asked to remain anonymous, indicate that those being asked to provide computer data to investigators include the agency’s chief counsel, William J. Wilkins, and both of his deputies. The chief counsel is one of just two political appointments at the IRS made by the president.

Investigators asked the IRS to gather all data from the computers of several employees throughout the agency, and their request, according to the source, was broadened late last week to include over a dozen employees in the chief counsel’s office. They include chief counsel William Wilkins as well as his deputy chief counsel for operations, Christopher Sterner and his deputy chief counsel for technical matters, Erik Corwin. Investigators are also mining the computer data of two lawyers in the chief counsel’s office responsible for procedures and administration, and nine others who oversee tax-exempt and government entitites. In all, the hard drives of 19 lawyers in the chief counsel’s office are being turned over to investigators.

Oh Oh here comes Rev Jeremiah Wright back into the picture. Can you imagine how deep the Chicago Roots go into the IRS Scandal. William Wilkins Represented Jermiah Wright. Right up to the top of the IRS.

This is going to be better then the Summer re-runs on OMG channels.

William Wilkins:

"His most high-profile case came during his time in private practice when, as a partner at WilmerHale, he represented Jeremiah Wright’s Trinity United Church against allegations that it violated tax laws by hosting a speech by Senator Barack Obama. (The church, as a non-profit, is prohibited from advocating for specific candidates.) WilmerHale took the case pro bono due to its interest in the matter."

Here is a little more history from 2008

http://www.americanlawyer.com/PubArticleTAL.jsp?id=1202421608526&slreturn=20130503182846

Seems that after doing a Pro-bono task for Rev Wright Wilkins gets a great job at the IRS. Chicago style payback.

“Lawyers from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have won the dismissal of an IRS case against United Church of Christ, Sen. Barack Obama’s denomination.

The IRS initiated an investigation early this year after a speech by Obama at a 50th anniversary celebration of the church last June. It was a reference by Obama to his presidential candidacy in a talk otherwise focused on faith that caught the agency’s attention.

Tax laws prohibit non-profits — including churches — from engaging in political speech or promoting candidates. The IRS can withdraw an organization’s tax-free status if the organization is found to violate the rule.

Obama has been a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago — a UCC congregation — for more than 20 years. The church has been in the headlines for several months now as the congregation lead by the controversial Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

WilmerHale was retained after church officials interviewed several firms, according to partner William Wilkins. “We were so interested in the case we offered to do it pro bono,” Wilkins says.”

Meet William J. Wilkins — the President’s Man at the IRS
“In other words, the Chief Counsel of the IRS was informed about the issue on August 4, 2011. So who is this Chief Counsel?

America, meet Obama appointee William J. Wilkins — briefed on the political targeting of conservative groups as of 8/4/11. Did he tell The White House about it at the time? Not that Jay Carney is aware of, as he told a skeptical press corps yesterday:”

When you read this story you realize that the net is being cast further and further, and that instead of the IRS scandal (crime wave!) going away it seems it must be getting more intense.

The investigators did not expand the data request because they were coming up with nothing. They expanded it because they have more leads.

I know most of us here at FR are rather impatient, but it is going to take some time to get through all of these leads.

I would really like to see this thread get more attention because I think the story here is a major part of the case.

You get the feeling this thread is not tracking as people are afraid to post on Freerepublic these days with the DOJ and the WH going after free expression of speech. I have noticed the last couple of weeks that FR threads are not as robust as in the past. I think folks are scared even here.

Very sad.

Sad indeed.

While I’m here, there is another story that needs to be cross-linked here:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3027258/posts

Six of Shulman’s visits to the WH were with Jason Furman. Wilkins also met with Furman in the WH around the middle of December 2012. The article behind the linked thread is fairly detailed and interesting. No smoking guns yet, but maybe soon.
