France's first same-sex marriage has taken place amid tight security. There were protests outside the ceremony after months of opposition that saw tens of thousands take to the streets. Europe correspondent Philip Williams reports.
PHILIP WILLIAMS, REPORTER: In the southern city of Montpellier, wedding nerves are accentuated by the live broadcast across France and beyond. 150 of the world's media were there to witness the first of many gay marriages to come.
Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau said their vows before the Mayor of Montpellier.
With the law allowing all of this to happen just a day old, this was highly controversial history in the making and sealed in a time-honoured way. Police have advised the newlyweds to keep a low profile.
BRUNO BOILEAU, GROOM: Our country made a step to equality, so it's a very important moment.
PHILIP WILLIAMS: Outside the venue there were protestors, but nothing like the 150,000 opposed to gay marriage who flooded Paris streets last weekend. Montpellier's Mayor received threats ahead of the wedding.
HELENE MANDROUX, MONTPELLIER MAYOR (voiceover translation): The letter said, "Madam L'Mayor, I hope you have hired some bodyguards." It went on to say, "We will get you one day."
PHILIP WILLIAMS: The law passed by a huge majority in the French Parliament, but with widespread opposition in the community, some mayors are refusing to cooperate.

Vincent and Bruno are married in Montpellier ...
I’ll just bet that’s the first time for french fags getting “married”.
How sis they get all the guests to fit in the bathroom? It was a crappy wedding.
What guy caught the boquet?
Gay Frenchmen... That’s redundant.
....after months of opposition that saw tens of thousands take to the streets.
Liars, hundreds of thousands if not over a million people took to the streets in opposition. More people took to the streets in Paris than there are gays in the entire country.
What guy caught the boquet?
****
The one standing on the toilet. :)
I thought ALL French weddings were “gay”.
I wish American conservatives were as bold and fearless in their expression.
Actually, not. France has bigger % of of people who are vocally opposed to "gay" "marriage" than does the USA.
I’ve been quite impressed by the massive size of the French anti-gay marriage protests. They even had one this past weekend, AFTER the socialists had already passed it. True, their opposition seems to come from a slightly different vein than in the US... more of a nationalistic preservation of culture and character.
Would love to see the same thing here in America, but I’m afraid America just no longer has any cohesive culture or national character to preserve and protect, other than a diffuse pallate of ‘pop’ degeneracy and nihilism, which further encourages the race down to the bottom of the sewer.
They are no more married now than they were before the ceremony. Just a couple of Butt bandits playing at perverted sex.
Personally speaking, I’m shocked at the opposition to gay marriage in France. I would have thought they’d be the last country on earth to oppose gay marriage. I guess they’re “Catholic” only on that one issue.
Now,pardon me while I go puke.
Oui, oui.
Time to mount up and ride off to Loveland.
Now we who were referred to as perverted because one of us gets his pleasure by sticking his pee-pee up the other’s poo-poo are now just a regular married couple.
When shi- on a shingle is served up it is exactly that.
