For all we know, the ‘talismans’ were a smartphone and a Kindle™. As Arthur C. Clarke stated, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from Magic.” To a mind stuck in the seventh century, any piece of 21st century technology is ‘sufficiently advanced’.
