“Why should we change that?”

In case you want prospective burglars to know when you are not home?

"The ultimate goal of the smart grid, of which smart meters are a part, is to connect us internationally to share the power we generate with the world,” she said. Having its own grid provides the state with autonomy it would not have otherwise, she said"

The goal of smart meters is to bring government tyranny directly into your home to limit your energy use at the whim of bureaucrats and their (and your) political masters.

I opted out.

My dumb meter is still on the pole.

I don’t know about other states but California’s “Green” Public Utilities Commission is in lock-step with the power companies (and the administration) to ration electric power. No matter how little you use they keep raising rates to make sure utilities pocket big profits (with the PUC’s blessings, of course).

Southern Calif. Edison allows you to opt out of the Big Brother meters — for an additional $30 a month on your bill! BB meter installation is coupled with a big publicity campaign for “free” government money to subsidize solar panel installations. It’s not like we’re being herded into a taxpayer paid “Green” corral or anything like that...is it?

I don’t know about these meters, but at least the citizens of Brady rose to action for something. Most towns would do nothing to protest much of anything.

People are going to jail over trying to remove smart meters from their house or trying to prevent the installation of them.

Glenn Beck has been all over this for a year now...nice to see the NY Times reporting for once.

I’ve had a smart meter for several years. No meter reader is one less thing for the dog to bark at.

I got another of those calls last week.

I simply said:

“NOT HAPPENING!”

Caller was trying to mumble some appeal as I hung up.

Our water co. tried to pull some bull with us to install a smart meter.

I happened to have A HORRIBLE flu when the guy came over - so I started to have a conversation with him, in FLU language, about how I had some medical conditions and my Dr. had told me “No smart meters” due to “medical equipment” I had to have to sustain my life.

He ran like a bastard out of my house. Turns out he had CUT the line outside on a perfectly good meter in order to claim that our meter was not working and needed to be replaced. It’s the super secret trick the towns are pulling now. The decent fellow who came to repair the cut line explained it all to me.

I just kept saying, “I don’t know anything but that my Dr. said the new digital meters will disrupt my life sustaining equipment.”

Then I cough real bad. REAL bad I say.

Wow! The operative word is “meter”. The smart meters allow large staff reductions at the utility company. You complain about your bill but tie the hands of engineers trying to make the system more efficient and cheaper. The smart meters themselves cannot disconnect electric power to your home. Disconnecting power needs a properly rated breaker — there is a manual disconnect in your house switch box. The next one back is at the transformer serving you and your neighbors. The smart meter would need to have a relay to trip an expensive replacement of your manual disconnect molded case circuit breaker and another relay to re-engage the breaker. The liability associated with such a device controlling all power to your house would be uninsurable at a reasonable cost.

Southern California Edison installed Smart Meters in our area last year. They initially said we could opt out but when it came to it the State Utilities Board allowed them to charge us a monthly $75 fee to have our meter read and $150 per year fine. Who could pay that? So we were forced to have the meter. Our bill jumped 10%. Meanwhile, because of the glut of solar panels companies are springing up to lease solar systems. So we are having a solar system installed on the house which will cut what we pay SCE from $200/month to $40. We will still have a Smart Meter but it’s a little of our own back. I’m sure Edison will make the State outlaw this before long. You all should look into it where you live. Ours is called Solar City.

It will take all of 30 seconds before the police are monitoring electricity of ‘targets of interest’ in real time, most likely without warrants.
