Several hundred thousand opponents of same-sex marriage marched in central Paris on Sunday against a reform the unpopular French government passed last month at the price of deepening political polarization.
Large park grounds around Les Invalides monument were full of protesters waving pink and blue flags, while far-right activists hung a banner on the ruling Socialist Party headquarters urging President Francois Hollande to quit.
The protests, which began as a grass roots campaign strongly backed by the Roman Catholic Church, have morphed into a wider movement with opposition politicians and far-right militants airing their discontent with Hollande.
Although they have failed to block gay marriage, the protesters hope their renewed show of force will help stop or slow down further laws some Socialists want allowing assisted procreation and surrogate motherhood for gay couples.
Jean-Francois Cope, leader of the opposition UMP party, marched in the demonstration and urged young protesters to join his party to keep up pressure on the left-wing government.
"The next rendez-vous should be at the ballot boxes for the municipal elections," he said, referring to local polls due next year where conservatives hope to profit from the protest movement's unexpectedly strong mobilization.
While the rally was peaceful throughout much of the day, police said they arrested 96 hardline opponents to the gay marriage law later on for refusing to disperse or occupying private property.

Here’s what I wrote yesterday to the title the RTcom wrote, whoever they are, citing thousands attended. The picture was included. They think we’re as dumb as lampposts.
“Looks like hundreds of thousands, millions, maybe.”
Good for the French. Their country is abundantly blessed and they know this acceptance of open gay lifestyle will lead to destruction.
Ooh, Reuters doesn’t include picture. They can’t, it’s too much for them.
It was huge.
This silly journalist group yesterday posted the picture, trying to say it was thousands:

Mon dieu! The Frenchies upset over gay marriage? Will their women shave their armpits in protest?
RE: Will their women shave their armpits in protest?
What about baring their breasts? :)
I think the French has seen the error of their ways in allowing tolerance free reign. They have hindsight.
Good for the French. They’re fighting back. Hey, when have you seen any mass protest in the U.S. over “gay marriage”?
If the Vatican is against Gay marriage, why don’t they excommunicate those catholic politicians that pushed this through?
RE: Hey, when have you seen any mass protest in the U.S. over gay marriage?
The thing about the USA is this -— WE HAVE 50 STATES and each state has its own laws.
If (God forbid) Gay Marriage becomes the norm in this once great union, it will come not with a huge bang as in France, but by a slow process of gradual acceptance and resignation.
Guess there is no such thing as a Far Left socialist.
Pray for America to Wake Up
The French are a little naive to think any socialist leader cares about their views.
Foolish historians of the future who think that history can be reconstructed from news accounts won't find any reports of it. And won't know that it ever happened.
The French are pissed, so, I don’t know about that.
They are not the wimps we like to think they are. They do not allow foreign language to take over, as we are now doing. And they think. and they know whre this is going,=.
Also, they don’t deny (pretend away)their government and press takeover by muslim operatives the way we do.
French people can be oddly parochial at times that conflicts with the whole socialist/Jacobin mindset, perhaps as a lingering remnant of their Catholic heritage.
I had a professor who was an emigrant, voted socialist. However one time somebody suggested they were offended because she taught a lullaby that dealt with the Virgin Mary, and she said rather sternly, “ I don’t care what you think, that’s the song and I’m not going to apologize for it.”
She seemed to be taken aback that people in the U.S. would get upset about talking about the Virgin Mary.
The Orthodox Serbs and Orthodox Russians don’t like it either...
Very impressive. I can no longer make jokes about the French. At least they are demonstrating an interest in cultural/societal preservation there. Russia has, too.
It’s funny, because I always expected America to be the last holdout, the one country left standing, fighting for Western Civilization. But the rate the US has been descending into the sewer, on a wide variety of fronts, from open-borders to cultural degeneracy to the one-party, statist direction we’re heading, I’m really wondering if America might be the first big domino to fall. And fall hard. Dragging others down with our momentum. A total reversal of what I used to anticipate.
