Obama Calls for Gitmo Inmates to Be Transfered to the United States

Obama Calls for Gitmo Inmates to Be Transfered to the United States Daniel Halper May 23, 2013 2:01 PM

In a speech today, President Obama is calling for the transfer for Gitmo inmates to the United States.

"The original premise for opening GTMO – that detainees would not be able to challenge their detention – was found unconstitutional five years ago. In the meantime, GTMO has become a symbol around the world for an America that flouts the rule of law. Our allies won’t cooperate with us if they think a terrorist will end up at GTMO. During a time of budget cuts, we spend $150 million each year to imprison 166 people –almost $1 million per prisoner. And the Department of Defense estimates that we must spend another $200 million to keep GTMO open at a time when we are cutting investments in education and research here at home," Obama will say.

As President, I have tried to close GTMO. I transferred 67 detainees to other countries before Congress imposed restrictions to effectively prevent us from either transferring detainees to other countries, or imprisoning them in the United States. These restrictions make no sense. After all, under President Bush, some 530 detainees were transferred from GTMO with Congress’s support. When I ran for President the first time, John McCain supported closing GTMO. No person has ever escaped from one of our super-max or military prisons in the United States. Our courts have convicted hundreds of people for terrorism-related offenses, including some who are more dangerous than most GTMO detainees. Given my Administration’s relentless pursuit of al Qaeda’s leadership, there is no justification beyond politics for Congress to prevent us from closing a facility that should never have been opened.

Today, I once again call on Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers from GTMO. I have asked the Department of Defense to designate a site in the United States where we can hold military commissions. I am appointing a new, senior envoy at the State Department and Defense Department whose sole responsibility will be to achieve the transfer of detainees to third countries. I am lifting the moratorium on detainee transfers to Yemen, so we can review them on a case by case basis. To the greatest extent possible, we will transfer detainees who have been cleared to go to other countries. Where appropriate, we will bring terrorists to justice in our courts and military justice system. And we will insist that judicial review be available for every detainee.

Even after we take these steps, one issue will remain: how to deal with those GTMO detainees who we know have participated in dangerous plots or attacks, but who cannot be prosecuted – for example because the evidence against them has been compromised or is inadmissible in a court of law. But once we commit to a process of closing GTMO, I am confident that this legacy problem can be resolved, consistent with our commitment to the rule of law.

If “O” and MO had a house of their own, I'd say: ‘Fine-let them live at YOUR place.’

However, “O” and MO didn't seem to have much of anything when they walked over the threshold at the WH. We'll see how much they managed to purloin, when they go.

I never understood the point of Gitmo in the first place

It's an issue dear to the far, far left...so far left that it's hard to even have a clue where they're coming from:

1) They've always objected to our presence in communist Cuba.

2) They think that if you are nice to the jihadis and "educate" them they lose their hostility.

3) They object to the US military in general so want it all to be handled in the civilian arena.

That's about it. Sounds ridiculous and even they are beginning to see how ridiculous it sounds. The only reason Obama is pushing it today is he's making a weak attempt to rally the troops who have nothing to hold onto amidst the scandals.

That treacherous s.o.b.

Once he gets his Muzzie friends on U.S. soil, you can forget about military commissions or anything else of the Bush-era apparatus for restraining these goons.

The terrorists will get themselves skank Communist lawyers from the Kunstler Center and the ACLU, they'll get their venues moved to East Coast towns with big Moo populations where hooked-up muftis can threaten and menace judges and jurors, and the attorneys can tap-dance through the phony dumbshow "prosecution" the Regime will put up.

Bottom line: Every one of those raggie terrorists gets turned loose, free as a bird, on U.S. streets, to hook up with his jihadi buds and go blow someone up.

Count on it -- and that's what Obama is working for, too.

And now he's got a surefire way to bust the raggies loose right in the center of the Main Target.

And by the time it happens, it won't have his fingerprints on it any more (at least, he can say that).

According to reports, Obama has devoted many hours of his presidency to personally choosing Islamofascist terrorists as targets for drone strikes.

So far, more than 4,000 such terrorists, including at least four American citizens, have been annihilated by Obama, with no thoughts about due process, Miranda rules, etc.

Yet we’re now asked to believe that Obama cares so deeply about the poor Islamofascist terrorists forced to endure a life a leisure in the terrible Gitmo that he wants to bring them to the U.S. for civilian trials and apparently better treatment, and also to save money for American taxpayers.

Why doesn’t Obama solve many problems at once by simply freeing the Gitmo inmates and transporting them to Syria to fight alongside their terrorist friends who are trying to overthrow Syria’s dictator? This would be much less expensive than sending them arms, and it would also give the impression that Obama has a policy on Syria.
