Paramilitary Police in America: How Did It Happen?
Freedom Outpost ^ | May 23, 2013 | Fred DeRuvo

It is clear that things have changed in America and much of it is due to two wars: the War on Drugs and the War on Terror. These ongoing conflicts have brought about major changes in the way law enforcement does business with Americans every day.

Because of the so-called war on drugs, SWAT teams began springing up across the land, tactically armed and ready to do whatever became necessary to overcome the drug problem that this country faces. The fight against terrorism has also been added to the picture and because of it, the same SWAT teams can be seen herding people out of their homes (without warrants), searching them (illegally), and then the homes they just vacated (also illegally), as was done recently in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing. Amazingly, nearly 90% of people polled believed that the police did a great job. This of course, is in spite of the use of force and restriction of rights.

Even today – May 21, 2013 – with Tea Party protests against the IRS occurring throughout America, DHS Police have been stationed at IRS facilities as a means of protecting those facilities and employees. This is in spite of the fact that there has not been a case of Tea Party-related violence with any person officially connected to the Tea Party movement, unlike the Occupy Movement.

The fact that Obama has used the DHS to create his own national police force is likely meant to be intimidating. Frankly, I’m not sure how such a force is Constitutional, but lawyers are probably better equipped to respond to that question than I am.

Sadly, as time moves on, we can assume that the DHS police force will likely be given greater authority by the Obama administration.

He even said he wanted a civilian force as powerful and well equipped as the military. I think he’s taking away from the military for the civilian force....

Too many politicaal idiots like the Bushes and too many Statist NAZIs like the bastard currently in the White House are to blame.

But you can REALLY blame ALL of it on the apathetic, self-absorbed voters who allow this to go on.

How did it happen?

Too easy.

Americans simply forgot - or more precisely, didn’t give a rat’s *ss - that, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”

You could just as easily blame it on the war on illegal immigration/parental custody disputes.

I don’t think that the hollow point bullets purchased by Social Security were for drug crime.

The para-militarization of civilian law enforcement was accelerated in the aftermath of 9/11. The then new Homeland Security department gave millions of dollars in grants to local LEA’s to upgrade their capabilities. A grant is a use it or lose it proposition, so local agencies went on a shopping spree for tactical and assault gear. Of course once you have the toys, you have to use them to justify the expenditure.

That isn't true, SWAT was created to deal with militant groups and armed groups, sniper backed riots, and potential shootouts, not to arrest people for drugs.
