That is the key point. Soldiers should be required to be armed, and they should be free to wear the uniform or not at their discretion, or perhaps encouraged to wear it. When some sixth century moron with a knife is looking for an easy target, he should be afraid to go after a British or American soldier with a gun, instead of giggling over the fact that soldiers are hiding from him. The strategy of hide and cringe reminds me of a mailman dealing with a barking dog - the more times the dog barks and the mailman acts afraid, the more aggressive the dog gets. We need a better strategy than cowering in fear.
