Judges, prosecutors, and opposing counsel love pro se defendants but I’d suspect 0 will make sure he has proper representation.

Wrong. Have you ever sat thru a trial, or even a hearing with a pro per (pro se) defendant? It is so PAINFUL! The judge feels like he has to explain everything to the D, so it all takes twice as long, and in the end, usually a court-appointed attny has to clean up the mess. I love when the D appeals, and reps himself. I don’t care what happens at those trials, I don’t have to work them!
