The strategy of painting the IRS as a victim is not a guaranteed win. Not by a long shot.

And the first thing to do is exactly what will win this for the conservative side. And it’s exactly the opposite of what Rush is doing.

It’s called not being afraid.

Rush is a great salesman for the virtues of conservatism. I learned with Bush v Gore in 2000 that Rush doesn't always grasp what is going on in real time. Carefully sorting through FreeRepublic offers insights Rush can't begin to match.

I love Rush, but he often embarrasses himself.

It’s comforting to hear you say that.

Because if not grasping it doesn’t explain Rush’s behavior, then I’d wonder if he was on the take.

Before the 24/7 news cycle and proliferation of conservative news websites, Rush used to be cutting edge. He would break stories and provide alternative commentary.

I don’t tune in often any longer, but when I do, he’s discussing two to three day old news and his commentary is no longer unique.

For people who do not follow news throughout the day, he might still be relevant, but to those who do, he’s really not anymore.
