Millions of Californians who contact the state's new health exchange to buy insurance will be given the opportunity to register to vote, too, a move that some Republicans fear could benefit Democrats.
Secretary of State Debra Bowen made California the first state to designate its health exchange as a voter registration agency Wednesday, but others are expected to follow suit, said Shannan Velayas, Bowen's spokeswoman.
"This is about making sure that all eligible Californians are offered the chance to register to vote," Velayas said Thursday.
A 1993 federal law requires states to designate their agencies and offices that provide public assistance or disability services as voter registration agencies, Velayas said.
The federal law commonly is known as "motor voter" because it ensured that applicants for drivers' licenses nationwide would be asked if they wanted to register to vote.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
What if it is designed to evolve into -
If you are not an Obama and ObamaCare peon, you don’t get to vote?
This country has become Alice in Wonderland...turned on it's head.
Can we get the NRA and Gun Stores and Shows as Voter Registration sites?
“One great cohort...”
Fee charging tax preparers ought to be recruited into a Voter Registration Drive.
Is there a Military Voter Registration Drive?
(Not that it would matter anyway; we know the 0bamaNazis would destroy the ballots anyway....)
Make sure you put a D after your name. Just saying.
Wait till they set up "satellite offices" in Tijuana and Mexico City.
Of course it will help with voter fraud.
A family member came to my (battleground) state to work for the zero campaign. They made it mandatory that the workers go door to door and got a verbal yes/no if the person was going to vote. My suspicion? The campaign filled out absentee votes (marked for zero) for all those who told the workers they weren’t planning on voting.
I think they have a recruiting office in Oaxaca.
Yes! Why should somebody actually have to be physically present on U.S. soil to receive social benefits and be protected by our Constitutional rights. Seriously, this is the next logical step, once we've legitimized criminal immigration. Why force people to actually come here?
What could go wrong? No “D”, no healthcare for YOU!
You have just described the ideologue of the community organizer in chief.
With all the reports out there about what a fustercluck of a train wreck this is going to be, Obama may want to think twice about attaching new voter registrations to it.
Yes. This varies from state to state but there are all kinds of political entities (Acorn for one) that go door-to-door and register voters. When I moved to Colorado in 1980 I registered at the grocery store through a League of Women Voters volunteer. The gun stores and gun shows is a great idea. I'm sure there are other venues where conservatives also congregate like NASCAR and local races, shooting ranges, bait and tackle stores.
Yep, if someone registers something other than D will they get lesser quality healthcare or have to wait longer, etc...
