LAKELAND --
A Lakeland mother shot her son in self-defense on Friday night, deputies said.
According to reports, 86-year-old Nancy Pennypacker told deputies she had shot her son, William Pennypacker, 64, in self-defense after he punched her in the face and fired a gun at her.
Deputies said moments later the two began shooting at each other, leaving Nancy with a bullet wound that shot through her finger to her shoulder.
William Pennypacker was found dead inside the home at Citrus Woods Estates off Orange Blossom Circle in Lakeland.
Nancys long time friend and neighbor, Sue Robbins, wasn't surprised and said there were plenty of warning signs.
We expected it for a long time, Robbins said. It would get pretty bad. She would have bruises all over her arms. Shes had black eyes."
According to arrest records deputies arrested William twice in the past for allegedly beating his mother and assaulting her with a deadly weapon, but the charges never stuck.

I know for a fact that in San Jose, CA, elder abuse is taken most seriously... the elder does not have to press charges, and a restraining order is filed on the elder’s behalf...
What a terrible thing to have to do.
They stuck this time.
He didn't, and they weren't.
If only Mrs. Lanza had had such nerve.
There seems to be an on-going theme in perps being free to do more bad things when they ought to be locked away.
I doubt we’ll hear: “He was a good boy. He never hurt anyone. He was just turning his life around. He always wanted to be a rapper or bag groceries and he finally got a job at the store down the street.”
no charges expected? Judas Priest. These poor moms with the no account sons that expect to be taken care of womb to tomb
So the son was “depressed”.Funny...I always thought that when one was depressed they sometimes contemplated harming *themselves*,not beating the tar out of their 87 year old mother. My diagnosis? The son was a filthy, worthless punk who got *exactly* what he deserved...but probably 40 years after he first deserved it.
“but the charges never stuck.”
Well, that shooting stuck.
