In all fairness, the Queen was born April 21, 1926. That made her 15 or 16 when she “enlisted”. She couldn't have joined much earlier.

Publicity stunt? Probably. I'll bet that she was the one who thought it up. Still, changing truck tires in the 40’s? Yuck.

I don’t think that the queen ever changed a tire during her weeks of photo ops and military service while retaining her personal guards and sleeping in the palace each night.

The queen was actually 19 when she enlisted for active duty as the Germans were surrendering in 1945, at age 16, in 1942 she was a Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

On her 16th birthday she was appointed Colonel of the Grenadier Guards in 1942.
The Grenadier Guards training element was stationed at her home, Windsor Castle as security and personal escorts for her.
