IMHO, corvettes and patrol boats in general aren’t much use to the USN, unless you want to create permanent naval bases in areas where you have confined short range threats of limited capability. They are extremely expensive and tempting targets against enemies with real air power, and if you have air supremacy, you have taken care of 90% of the mission the patrol boat is good for.

The United States does have patrol boats, but we call them Coast Guard cutters. I fear the new LCS (a corvette) will prove my point. It is far less capable than a DDG-51 and has no real niche capability that can’t be filled by teh DDG. The only positive that I can think of is that it is cheaper (maybe) to build, operate, and replace.
