I hear that in heaven, the engineers are German, the cooks are French, and the cops are English. In hell, the cooks are English, the engineers French, and the cops German!

Actually, I’ve had some excellent German food. Never lived there or eaten it as a steady diet, but what I had home cooked or in restaurants was very good.

My (paternal) grandfather, Rudy, was a cook at the Fred Harvey restaurants in Chicago. His food was wonderful; although, my Dad told me that it was actually his mother who taught his father how to cook. Both were German. His gravy was to die for. So, Germans can be very good cooks.

I've lived in Saarbrücken, Germany for a year and ate German food as a steady diet. In those days, the early '70's, Germany wasn't as cosmopolitan as it was today, so the only non-German restaurants available served Middle Eastern, Dutch and Italian food--and within a week, I had eaten at every Italian restaurant in town.

Although I like German food, I became so starved for American food that I tried to make a hamburger using a Brötchen, a chewy breakfast roll, as a bun, but it didn't work. There were also no Mexican restaurants and there was no way to make Mexican food, since tortillas, masa and salsa were unavailable.

The Wienerwald, a somewhat upscale restaurant, served the only fried chicken I could find in Germany, but the chicken wasn't cut into parts, as it is here. And if you could find an Argentine restaurant, you could get an American-style steak that wasn't smothered in sauce.

I also never saw a Chinese or Japanese restaurant in Germany.

Grew up going to Helen Ga several times a year and the Bavarian restaurants there are so good.

I remember finding that Wiener Schnitzel wasn’t a wiener at all, but delicious roast pork with gravy over red skinned (skins still in) mashed potatoes. Argh.... so good!

I hear that the best men are American, the worst - Arab. Best women are Japanese and the worst - well, we won't say. That said, your comment's right on. Germans would be the best engineers and English the best inventors. And yeah, I've had great German food too... :)
