You do realize there is nothing 'new' to a nuclear weapon? The recipe is there, the hardware on current warheads and weapons degrades. Modern replacements and testing ensure reliability into the future.
There is not really a need to detonate the entire weapon, just testing the parts being modernized. Those can be done without the nuclear aspect added to the equation. Even then, there is an abundance of simulation and comparative hard data to predict performance.

Same thing here. Modernized hardware, exquisitely designed as a direct replacement with 100% reliability built in, abusively tested beyond the endurance of any component replaces a degraded or diminished capacity component.
It takes time, money, and some of the brightest PhD's in the world to make it all happen.
Honestly, this is probably why all the scandals are either coming out or getting coverage, i.e. to distract while we are disarmed so our enemies will have there way with us at some future date.
Maybe it’s time the military steps up and says no...
