Gallup: Same-Sex Marriage Support Solidifies Above 50% in U.S.
Gallup ^ | 05/13/2013 | Jeffrey M. Jones

Posted on 05/13/2013 12:30:31 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Fifty-three percent of Americans say the law should recognize same-sex marriages, the third consecutive reading of 50% or above in Gallup polling over the past year. The 53% in favor ties the high to this point, also measured last November and in May 2011.

Gallup's May 2-7 poll suggests Americans' support for gay marriage is solidifying above the majority level. Recently, Rhode Island and Delaware legalized same-sex marriage, and Minnesota is likely to follow suit. That would bring the total number of states legally recognizing same-sex marriage to 12.

Just three years ago, support for gay marriage was 44%. The current 53% level of support is essentially double the 27% in Gallup's initial measurement on gay marriage, in 1996.

Nearly all U.S. subgroups are more likely to favor gay marriage now than in the past. Politically, Democrats, independents, and liberals all show increasing support for gay marriage over time, with each well above the majority level now. Republicans, conservatives, and moderates are more likely to favor gay marriage now than in 1996, but the increase in support among these groups may have stalled. Thus, most of the increase in the percentage favoring legal gay marriage in the last three years has come among left-leaning groups politically.

Yet it still can’t pass when put up to an actual vote.

Well, if the MAJORITY are in favor, then it must be ethical, right?

I’m waiting ‘til the MAJORITY votes to murder and loot the wealthiest 40%, (47% is only enough to loot - not to exact revenge).

Wow really??? I did a survey today and in Mississippi, I asked 47 people and only one 20 year old sandra fluke slut said she was for abortion... 46 said they were against the murder of the most innocent amongst us.

I wish I shared your optimism. in November 2012 Maine voted in favor of a law allowing same sex couples to marry.

In California, the percentage of those who are opposed to proposition 8 has been dwindling from a huge majority to a bare majority.

It used to be. Blue states are now voting for it. Red states like NC are still resoundingly defeating it.

I cannot think of another issue that seen such a sea change in a few short years. Unfortunately, those of us against it stopped fighting about 5 years ago because preserving marriage looked politically settled. The proponents of change went into overdrive starting with the H8 campaign in Califoria and really moved the needle...making it a ‘civil rights’ issue. Our side needs to learn lessons from this situation because I think we laughed off that stupid campaign and didn’t take it seriously.

Somehow conflicts with the fact that it has never won an election.

Perhaps the Gallup pollsters went to the same math classes as do the climate change physics failures.

“I’m still waiting for GLEE to be canceled.”

Word has it that the network is planning on changing the name to “Gay-Lee”.

Amazing what happens when people vote in private, as opposed to having to answer a pollster.....

I agree! It’s BS. Ask me the right way if gays should be able to get married and I would say “yes!”

What they don’t know is the rest of the story.

Yes, if they can find a church that is willing (not binded by any government law) to marry them.

Yes, as long as the federal government does NOT recognise a marriage that is not between one man and one woman.

Ask the question straight (no pun intended)and I’ll bet support for gay marriage will be under 30%
