Frankly, as flawed at Romney was in 2008 and in 2012, I am not sure who in either race was better. I don’t blame DeMint for supporting someone who was good on core economic issues. I don’t doubt DeMint got assurances on a number of key issues to pull the guy to the right as much as possible.
We just had no good candidates during the past two cycles. I reluctantly voted for Romney in 2008 in FL to try to knock McCain out of the lead. Romney is far better than the back stabbing McCain by every measure. In 2012, in the same position, I reluctantly voted for Newt to try to knock Romney off his path to the nomination. I had no believe that Newt could win the general, I am certain he wouldn’t have. Even though we would have put up a better fight, we lost on the women’s vote who got suckered by the war on women. Newt is a much tougher candidate to lure female votes than Romney.
No one can challenge DeMint on fidelity to conservative principles. He bucked the party through the past two cycles to boost no less than 6-8 conservative Senators to office. He, more than anyone in the nation, changed the course of the listless and spineless Senate GOP caucus over the past 3 years.
DeMint for President...
DeMint’s playing footsie with Willard back to ‘08 was evidence he was not the solid Conservative he proclaimed himself to be.
