The family of the late Derek Boogaard has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the NHL.
The former enforcer for the Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers died in May 2011 from a lethal mix of alcohol and oxycodone. He had become addicted to painkillers while dealing with concussions and other injury issues during his six-year NHL career.
From the New York Times:
"To distill this to one sentence," said William Gibbs, a lawyer for the Boogaards, "you take a young man, you subject him to trauma, you give him pills for that trauma, he becomes addicted to those pills, you promise to treat him for that addiction, and you fail."The NHL, through a spokesman, declined to comment Sunday.
The suit filed in Cook County in Illinois doesn't seek any specific damages but asks for the jury to award more than the minimum.
If it needs to be spelled out, this is a potentially massive situation for the NHL. Boogaard's family has been pretty open since Derek's death about his struggles with drugs brought on by his time as an NHL player. After his death, he was diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, from repeated head trauma.

It's not Derek's fault that two NHL teams forced him to beat up opposing players ... which caused him to become a drunk and a pill popper!
We might get a better game out of it than thug hockey.

The NHL is better at handling concussions than the NFL. Probably because star players (Eric Lindros, Paul Kariya...to name a few) have had careers cut short by head injuries. The Sidney Crosby concussion incident cost home a year of playing

Hey: They and their lawyers are looking for a buck and concussion is the latest lawyer path to rich’s.
Surprised it isn’t a class action suit. The lawyers love those they rake in millions while their clients get pennies.

I imagine the oxycotin was for the headaches as a result of a head injury. That being said, any neurologist worth his salt is very careful with dosage and refills.
Well, duuuh! That’s why we have obamacare and have to turn over all our private information and are shielded by the msm from all the bad things in out there.

If there’s actual documentation the league promised him rehab and didn’t provide it they’ll lose. Short of that they probably would win. Of course in the end they’ll probably settle out of court rather than have the league’s dirty laundry on the public record.
