During the Johnson and Nixon Administrations, the focus of the I.R.S.'s effort at political control was individuals and organizations demonstrating for civil rights

Not "civil rights," per se, but the Soviet infiltration (and even creation) of so-called civil rights groups.

The great singer, Paul Robeson, was tragically used and abused by his Moscow controllers. MLKing too had some connections to Moscow, though not to the degree Robeson did.

This is not to say that everyone engaged in the civil rights cause was completely corrupted. But the Soviet Union did use these groups to promote agitprop and to undermine U.S. government.

I was surprised to find out that although Nixon was brought down by tapes of recordings in the Oval Office, that HE didn't have the machines installed. They were there during LBJs term, and maybe earlier.

But how often do we hear about the buzz about "new LBJ tapes being released to the public"?

I bet there's some real gems to be found.

One of the most exhaustive and meticulous audits was processed by the authorities on a certain senator. I have read through much of it and it was incredible. At one time this senator had made a statement.

"The reason why we find ourselves in a position of impotency is not because the enemy has sent men to invade our shores, but rather because of the traitorous actions of those who have had all the benefits that the wealthiest nation on earth has to offer- the finest homes ,the finest college educations, the finest jobs in Government we can give."

The investigators could not lay a glove on him. He even footed his own expenses, that he could have claimed. Name of Joseph McCarthy.

At least President Nixon had a valid national security excuse, albeit somewhat wrong-headed and unconstitutional.

Not to mention that he was handed the mess (by a couple Dims) and wanted/needed to get a handle on it.
