Sequestration already biting Navy, Marines readiness
Federal News Radio ^ | 2 May 13 | Jared Serbu

Defense Department leaders spent months warning Congress that military readiness would begin to erode if sequestration went into effect on March 1. The Navy and Marine Corps are telling lawmakers that it's now happening and that things will only get worse from here. Across government, agencies say the impact of sequestration will be somewhat insidious. But in the case of DoD's two sea services, they're already feeling it, officials told the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness.

"Due to reduced training and maintenance, almost all of our non-deployed ships and aviation squadrons are soon going to be less than fully mission capable and not certified for major combat operations. That's about two-thirds of the fleet," said Vice Adm. William Burke, the deputy chief of naval operations for warfare systems. Two months into sequestration, the Marine Corps told a similar story. Lt. Gen. William Tryon, the deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations, said more than half of all non-deployed Marine units are currently at "unacceptable" levels of readiness.

"And our crisis response mission is incompatible with tiered readiness," he said. "Marines don't start to get ready when a crisis occurs. We must be ready, we must be forward deployed and we must be prepared to respond immediately."

Limited surge capacity

Both services say they have not yet been put in a position in which they've been forced to deploy forces and equipment without the requisite training and preparation.

Sailors and marines who are currently deployed or who are next in line to deploy have had their training funded. But to accomplish that in the context of severely constricted operating and maintenance budgets, the services say they've had to virtually eliminate training for service members in line behind them.

Ah, who cares, right?

Food Stamps for everybody! (1 in 5 American households).

Let's keep the direct deposit checks just right on rolling and screw over the military.

The really sick thing about this is that nobama has the choice to “cut back” spending on whatever he wants. Maybe “cut back” on entitlements to individuals, illegal alien benefits, foreign aid or other complete-BS government spending???? No...the anti-American one couldn’t do that, could he?

Liberals use starving the military as a bargaining chip against conservatives. Vote in increase public housing assistance and free cell phones for poor people and I’ll vote to fund upgrades to the F-15.

1) After Benghazi and the “Video” I believe nothing that comes out of this WH. It is all political propaganda. They have sacrificed American lies for own political benefit.

2) The Sequester can easily be fixed by responsible politicians who put the country first and their party second, unfortunately those people don’t exist in America.

Do you believe the military itself when every service, every senior leader, every member of the Joint Chiefs, and almost every mid-level officer and career NCO says that Sequestration is a disaster for the US military?

What I have noticed on this board for months is that most Freepers know in their hearts that Sequestration singled out the military and punished it fiscally. But, their hatred for Obama, their gullibility to spin that masked the truth of the cuts to the military, and their lust for spending cuts that exempted things that they wanted (like SS and Medicare) trumped their judgment.

I think this goes above and buyond commiecare.

There is an aspect to all of this, which Republicans are ignoring. Unfortunately it is part and parcel of it.

We have sent our American industry overseas.

Which means when we buy stoff the money goes overseas, but NO AMERICANS MAKE ANY MONEY except for a bit on the sale.

We need to bring back US manufacturing.

Big. And now.

Our perfumed princes at the Pentagon are equally culpable IMHO. They had a year and a half to plan for the sequestration, but spent most of that time crying and moaning about the effects on readiness.

They've been making excuses that they would never let their junior officers get away with.

As a young lieutenant, I was reminded constantly that everything my unit did, or failed to do, was my responsibility. It seems to me that these generals have forgotten that mantra.

That’s the plan.

Meanwhile, billions going to muzzy countries

that old ‘resdistribution thing. He “redistributed” our Space Program out of existance, for starters - and has been working on destroying our military since the get go...

while hiring/arming his private army, aka Homeland Security. (He can’t count on our Constitutionally legal in ccountry forces - local cops, sheriffs, national guard, coast guard. After all, THEY took an other to defend this country from “all enemies, foreign AND domestic.” ‘Can’t count on them to turn their guns on us.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt2yGzHfy7s

He CAN count on the brain dead goons of the DHS/TSA/IRS/Acorn to do so. - they’re hired and armed up.

But they have no combat training. Guns alone don’e make a viable fighting force. Why do you think he’s adament about taking our returned vets guns away?

If we could get rid of the Unions that might happen.

Also we need to get rid of Obamacare.
No manufacturer could survive paying out all that Obamacare requires. IMO we will see more manufacturing leave as Obamacare takes over.

I agree 100%.

Republican politicians have left the people completely and gone over to the Democrats.

We need a new party, need it badly. We have too many back stabbing politicians in the RINO party to ever save it.

Like a failing restaurant, we need a new menu.

But they are moving towards a more computer-based, look at pictures instead of going hands-on, platform for more and more training. I predict that within two years, missions suffer horribly due to going the cheap route for critical training.

They had a year and a half to plan for the sequestration

The ugly truth is there was no way to "plan" for cutting $46 Billion in the middle of a Fiscal Year. Moreover, had the Pentagon taken the lead before the election year and started cutting before the cuts actually went into effect, they would have sent a signal to Congress that they cuts were just hunky dory.

Google the news history of Sequestration from last summer and fall - you will find that both parties told the military and the country that these cuts would not happen, because they were so destructive to the military (it take 50% of all cuts despite being 17% of the budget).

The military is the hostage in this ugly political game, and the hostage was shot in the kneecaps.
