why on earth would the Sussex dept of land or whatever just, badaboom, send me a letter, a FORM letter, willy-nilly telling me to move my fence? Shouldn’t they check into that sort of thing?

Because they are overworked and underpaid, or, because it's easier to send you a form letter than argue with the complainant.

If your property was subdivided from a larger piece of land, the original owner may have been required to file a subdivision plat. Check your deed to see if you own, say, Lot 2, XYZ subdivision, or if it is lengthy metes and bounds description. Your neighbors my not have a survey, but that doesn't mean one was never done.

And how about your title insurance company? Can they provide you with any support or guide you where to find such help?

For now, all I can say is like you, I suspect something not quite right here.

One thing, these surveyors were lollygagging all around my property line, get this, on the day of my husband’s funeral. My son-in-law, who meant well, was out there yelling at them, telling them to go away....

Son in law, not too bright, but he was passing to me all the things those guys were saying and one thing soninlaw told me was something about “the county made a mistake”.

My neighbor on one side is taking this very serious, she was boo-hooing that it would cost her $1,500 to move her fence and she had pets buried there.

Why is she so worried? I asked her if she had a survey? She said....”I did at one time” which, I must shrug. I would never lose such a thing but I guess you never know. She did say it was over 24 years ago.

Neighbor on other side says this is all about some other guy down the street whose fence was like ten feet over the line.

Heh.

Well truth is....I planned on tearing down my back fence anyway so it don’t much matter to me if in the end it turns out they get four more feet from my backyard. It’s plenty big and less for me to mow.

I suspect, but bear in mind I don’t know much about this, that those two neighbors on either side of me were too supposed to get a survey done as their lot boundaries changed. I suspect that builder got a survey and snuck it in because I don’t think they got a survey. There’s a history with the guy who owned my house before and he was a stickler and bit of a pain. He for sure had a lawful survey done and I think those people behind me want to lessen the easement of forest they are obligated to provide.

Again, folks, I dunno. But I got me a column read by everybody in Delaware, I am a recent widow....I shall use the Democrat method of making it all about emotion.

Pics of me chained to my fence, waving my certified and signed survey around....WHICH HAS AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF MY FENCE ON IT!!!

Heh.

God does this stuff to me, serious. Cause though I write fiction, even I couldn’t make it up.

PS...don’t forget pic of loyal dog who will run off once the constable tears down my fence. She will be sad too.
