The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is yet again considering a meal-tax proposal that would hike the tab at every county restaurant, bar and fast-food establishment by 4 percent.
Although it sounds like proposals that have been rejected in the past, including last year, Supervisor Gerry Hyland, D-Mount Vernon, says that this one is different.

This tax would apply to ALL eating establishments not just sit down restaurants.

They are always different. The answer is the same . No.
And people need to say that more. No. Two letters. Rolls right off the tongue with no effort.

I am surprised these people have not advocated putting meters on everyone’s toilets and taxing them for bowel movements. Seems to be their next logical step, tax what goes in and then tax what goes out.

Just came back from the super Wally-World with only a hand full of bags and lighter by 106 bucks, and that's the Wally-World, forget about the Giant Eagle!

That was precisely my thought after getting a hamburger (my first because I had a coupon and my last because it’s too expensive) a couple of weeks ago at Carl’s. I live in the Houston suburbs and although they keep building more and more restaurants - both sit down and drive-thru, they all seem to be extremely busy most of the week.
Attended our monthly meeting of local Republicans this week which is held at a local restaurant. They were jam packed and not just singles or couples, but families of four or more. Even though it’s just once a month, I had to quit eating there because $10 for a sandwich and cup of coffee is just too expensive. Not sure how all these people manage.

I don’t see how anyone with a family of any size on a typical income can go anyhwere except bargain basement fast food.
I live outside Columbia in the burbs where there are more than a few pretty good places both fast food and sit down. They are all going up price-wise to the point where I once in a while justify the expense.

About half the money raised by the tax on food and drink in commercial establishments would be used to lower real estate taxes by "a similar amount," Hyland says. Such a shameless liar.

Born 1962 in Alexandria Hospital. Reared for a few months in a trailer park off RT 1. Parents bought a house in Virginia Hills in late '62...Raised there..went off to join the Corps and returned after four to join the FCPD and quickly learned how filthy, nasty and vulgar our nations capitol is...even from the politician filled suburbs of Fairfax County...got the hell out seven years ago to the mid-south.
I'll never look back!

You’re probably right about that but I’m not cut out of that cloth.
When I was waiting to pay for my coffee at the restaurant I watched several families in line in front of me as they paid for their orders and all did so with cash. Makes me think that the underground economy is alive and doing quite well.
Most self-employed workmen in our area prefer to be paid in cash.
