Gun business exodus begins in Colorado
The Daily Caller ^ | 5-3-2013 | Greg Campbell

HiViz Shooting Systems, a gun-parts manufacturer in Fort Collins, Colo., will move its operations up the road to Laramie, Wyo., making good on its threat to pull up its Colorado roots after Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law several controversial gun control measures earlier this year.

Of the businesses planning to leave the state for the same reason, HiViz is the first to announce its new home.

“The decision to relocate the company was difficult, and choosing the proper location was essential to our continued growth within the industry,” said president and CEO Phillip Howe in a press release. “We look forward to settling into our new home in the firearm friendly state of Wyoming.”

Wyoming was chosen not just for its gun-friendly atmosphere, but also its tax advantages and because Laramie is less than an hour from its current location, allowing existing employees the option of commuting.

Construction on HiViz’s new headquarters is expected to start operations this summer.

The most high profile of the companies defecting from Colorado is Magpul Industries, which makes 30-round rifle magazines in small-town Erie, Colo.

One of the bills Hickenlooper signed bans magazines that hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition. The new law goes into effect July 1.

Magpul is expected to announce the location of its new headquarters after the National Rifle Association meeting this weekend in Houston. Wherever its new home, it’s already in operation: The company wrote on its Facebook page this week that gun sights and standard 30-round magazines (called PMAGs) are now being manufactured outside Colorado for the first time.

Magpul employs about 200 people and has been courted by Texas, Wyoming, South Carolina and Utah, to name just a few states eager for its business. Texas Gov. Rick Perry even made a personal appeal to the company.

Perhaps if Gov. Perry would throw a little hustle into getting this passed the decisions by gun related manufacturers would be a LOT easer.

Did a little research a couple of months ago. Laramie looked like a really friendly place for productive-type folks.

Laramie is a college and government town. Wyoming might be a good call but I’m not sure Laramie was. Whatever commie rats live in Wyoming probably reside in Laramie or Jackson Hole.

This Coloradan may be old and decrepit and close to broke, but is looking elsewhere.

Hi-Viz and Magpul are two companies that make outstanding products.

They need to be making them in FREE states. Too bad that no longer includes Colorado.

They also need to stop selling their products to states which legislate against the sale of their products to citizens. Police forces in such states should be shut off from new weapons and repair parts.

Consider the Missouri Ozarks.
Low taxes, deer and turkey are plentiful, great fishing, low cost of living, you can shoot your gun.
Did I mention low taxes ?

If lots of commie rats live there, then it’s good to overwhelm them with new good people. Maybe they’ll leave before they destroy another state. Like mine!

Consider the Missouri Ozarks.

I might, though I'm already living in a state dominated by the largest city: Denver is well on its way toward becoming the San Francisco of the Rocky Mountains. St. Louis and Kansas City don't bully the rest of Missouri?

Wide spread election cheating and local corruption is rampant. The middle of the state is great, tho...

I was wondering the same. I thought Texas with the location, transportation infrastructure, manufacturing base, 30 million potential customers, etc. would be an excellent choice... but God works in mysterious ways. We've already been diluted by foreigners (Kalifornians - ah, no offense). So maybe their reloc to Laramie is a better choice...?

Amen! My Grandparents built their house in Arvada when it was still rural. Growing up in Colorado I remember trucks with gun racks with guns, my Grandfather was one. That wasn’t that long ago (I’m 47). Colorado is not what it used to be. Sad.
