In runners' tent and ER, a rush to save limbs -- and lives

The instant Jim Asaiante heard the first explosion, he flashed back to Iraq.

"That was an IED," he said to no one in particular.

The former Army nurse fought the urge to rush toward the wounded. He knew there would be a second blast. Tending to soldiers blown up by roadside bombs had taught him that.

Asaiante paused and waited a few seconds. The ground shook again, a percussive explosion that sent more people scrambling, more smoke roiling down Boylston Street. While most ran for their lives, first responders like Asaiante swooped into action.

In the days to come, first responders would face down suspects in a massive manhunt that paralyzed a city. One officer would lose his life in a gunbattle, another would be critically wounded, while halfway across the country 10 emergency workers would be killed in a giant fertilizer plant explosion.

On Monday, Boston fell silent to mark the bombings and remember the victims. But in that moment exactly one week ago, helpers ranging from marathon volunteers to police officers to runners stopped in their tracks to help.

Asaiante had been a volunteer assigned to care for elite athletes in a tent just feet from the finish line. To him, the Boston Marathon was a rite of spring -- a way to celebrate everything great about the city....

Good read, thanks for posting.

The cowardly pukes who created all that devastation were outnumbered by the good guys (and gals) who stepped forward. Doesn’t undo the damage & little comforts those who lost loved ones or physical function, but it’s something no terrorist can quell. We are still Americans.

Brought tears to my eyes. Surprised it’s from CNN. Some of the comments show how the idiots are drawn to CNN. One has a Slash through GOD as his logo.

he bombers choice to hit an easy target - an area with a large population of families including young children was instill fear and loathing. Yet the bombers whom were instructed by a Chechan mastermind forgot one aspect - the Boston Marathon would have medical personnel present - the amount of deaths were left to a minimum. (i am not being heartless to those whom died and received debilitating injuries). Maximum casualities were not achieved. This type of destruction will come into play again till maximum casuality rates are achieved and the desired outcome is achieved - more 9/11 diminshment of American Freedoms and liberties. Look at the Worldtrade Center Bombing in 1993, 8 years later they achieved their objective on 9/11.

Muslims use significant dates in their history of the caliphate and also battles with the West, where in fact the Muslims were unsuccessful. They want those dates to be etched into into the radical jihadist mind. Maximum destruction and death will make you a martyr. If the jihadist will achieve a success, he/she will be held on high and more jihadist will become emboldened by the success.

In 1983, the Marines Barracks in Lebanon was blown up. in 1993 the World Trade center, The USS Cole, The 9 11 attacks on New York City the Pentagon and the plane that was crashed into a field in PA. The Muslim psychiatrist of Allah Akbar fame and the other list of terrorist attacks shoebomber, underwear bomber all this attacks have a purpose to inflict fear and make the American people cower to the Muslim.
