What happened to the days when immigrants had to prove they had a job waiting and were useful to society?
Well even though having a sponsor, etc. was part of our legal immigration laws it was never enforced on the welfare level. About 25 years ago I worked for our welfare dept. and had switched from being an eligibility worker in food stamps to Medi-Cal (California’s version of Medicaid). I was working I&R (intake and referral) and had a legal immigrant come in who had only been here a couple of years. After he left I asked my supervisor if he was eligible according to the immigration laws. Oh, we don’t enforce that, its not our job she said. So I passed the case on.
