OK... a middling NBAer attempts to leverage his position on the team by announcing he’s homosexual. That way, he has homophobia card to play whenever he’s released.
I understand that he is a free agent. So, any team that doesn’t pursue him is open to a lawsuit for discrimination.
“Middling”? This guy is one of those roster fillers who has averaged less than 2 points and 2 rebounds per game over the past 8 seasons. He gets hired to take a minimum salary and play a few minutes per game to give the stars a breather, while freeing up salary cap space. He’s a free agent and had little hope of landing another job next season. But now he’s made himself poster boy of the progressives and a number of teams will be scrambling to have him sit on their bench as souvenir, proving that the whole “gay” rights movement is more about gaining special privileges for the mediocre than about equality. This ain’t exactly a Jackie Robinson moment for the NBA.
This guy's mediocre but lengthy pro basketball career is coming to an end anyway. He is 34 years old. So, yes, he could possibly play the homophobia card should he be unwanted by any team in the NBA next year. But he also realizes that "coming out" now at the tail end of his basketball career creates commercial opportunities as a "celebrity" that he wouldn't have had otherwise. Amazing that he's gone from relatively obscurity (a bench player on a bad team) to the idol of left-wing political types literally overnight.
Wouldn't be surprised if his agent set this up for him and will take a percentage of whatever is be gotten from the "coming out" party.
He's not even a mid-tier NBA player. He's a back bencher (no pun intended.)
The rest of your statement you're 100% correct on.
At 36 years old, he's considered "at the end of his career." In the best of conditions (think: Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, players of that caliber) there might be one or two years left to play. But a third-string back bench player?
Not gonna happen. This is all about setting up the homophobia/discrimination crap and potential lawsuits going forward. The homo's will idolize this guy despite his not being a star player.
