St. Paul school sued after sixth-grader banned from handing out anti-abortion fliers

A parent at St. Paul's Nova Classical Academy alleges the charter school violated his sixth-grade daughter's right to free speech when administrators prohibited her from passing out anti-abortion fliers.

The parent, Nicholas Zinos of St. Paul, has sued the school in federal court on behalf of the girl.

Nova policy requires administrator approval before students hand out or post materials at school, the lawsuit states. In a letter to Zinos, the school's top administrator said the school has come to limit political, religious and controversial speech to its high school students in response to parental concerns.

The lawsuit alleges the school policy gives administrators "unbridled discretion" to limit student speech in violation of the First and 14th amendments.

Zinos, the owner of a religious bookselling business in St. Paul, referred questions to the Alliance Defending Freedom, an Arizona-based legal advocacy organization.

“”It is never legitimate to restrict speech because it is offensive to someone,” Levine said.”

Yes. It is.

Same rule in my son’s public high school and he did it any way to protest. He did Saturday detention but he understood “do the crime do the time.”

I don’t think 6th graders are granted all the rights adults are.

If they were, they could operate in the world without parents.

They would have helped her hand out pamphlets on how to engage in gay sex.

Imagine the day your first grade daughter comes home and asks “Mommy (Daddy), what’s an abortion?”

I raised my family in a Catholic parish area of a large city in the 80s-90s. Our preschool used to walk kids over to the public park for play time. One day my three-year-old came home and said, "Mom, what's a fikkin faygh?" Given his young age, I said that was ugly language meant to hurt some people, and we don't say name-calling in our family.

We were assaulted by nasty in a lot of ways in the city, such as a gay porn magazine laid open on the steps of the church as we exited; but I learned always to remain calm, and quietly but firmly explain that some people have no love in their lives, causing them to do things that hurt themselves and make God sad, and that our family would never want anyone to do.

When they got to be teens, I drew a priority chart with God at the top, family second, school, congregation and work third, friends and neighbors next, and lastly entertainment and spare time. Seemed to work out ok.

I could end abortion tomorrow.

Just let me pass a law that all unborn babies can be counted as democrat voters.

Just as the politicians are willing to ignore the invasion of the country and even give the invaders our money so long as they vote democrat, the same politicians would finally protect the unborn if they could count on their vote.

This school has a pro life club for high school students. Maybe they just don’t think the subject of abortion is a something sixth graders should have to deal with.
