Mattresses are surely overpriced. I paid %650 for one, it was so bad they took it back, the next was $1,000 dollars and it sucks, Serta.
Why Does The Problem Exist?
Some will point to trade laws enacted in the 1970s that prohibit manufacturers from setting a price floor. A price floor is a minimum selling price. The reason for a price floor set by a manufacturer is to keep profits high for their resellers, which helps keep profits high for the manufacturer.
With the new law, many discount mattress retailers opened up and undercut the big department stores. Naturally, the department stores were not happy about this so they started to negotiate with the manufacturers. The outcome of this was for the manufacturers to provide exclusive models to the department stores, to set them aside from the discount retailers. These exclusivity deals eventually spread and have lead to the very unique situation we have today were just about every retailer sells exclusive models, completely snuffing the ability for a consumer to comparison shop.
Beyond the Name, What Makes Their Mattress Better?

Thank God all i need to use is is a cheap 1-1/2 inch camping type foam pad, and a pillow under my hips. I am short and have tight limbs (and conscience) and realized many years ago that i slept as well or better in a sleeping bag on a carpeted floor than on a mattress which i used to use. I used to have back pain, but thank God that is gone.
I usually do not go to bed till i am very tired, and ask forgiveness for my failings and usually sleep well (unless i am not tired enough or ate too late).
Some people say a $20 Coleman air mattress is the best they used, covered with bedding.
