The mascot is supposed to scare athletic rivals
The university I teach at revamped their mascot a few years ago. It went from something fearsome looking to something warm, fuzzy, and (for all practical purposed) unrecognizable. I think the idea was to come up with a mascot that wouldn’t offend anyone. Given the end result, they might have well made a bowl of mush the mascot.
