So what is it about liberalism that makes it so difficult for it to take a clear, critical look at Islam, even while liberals have no problem excoriating Christians for every imaginable historical evil?
I believe I can give at least a partial answer, if we take a big step back from the present scene and view the history of Western liberalism on a larger scale.
Liberalism is an essentially secular movement that began within Christian culture. (In Worshipping the State, I trace it all the way back to Machiavelli in the early 1500s.) Note the two italicized aspects: secular and within.
As secular, liberalism understood itself as embracing this world as the highest good, advocating a self-conscious return to ancient pagan this-worldliness. But this embrace took place within a Christianized culture. Consequently liberalism tended to define itself directly against that which it was (in its own particular historical context) rejecting.
Modern liberalism thereby developed with a deep antagonism toward Christianity, rather than religion in general. It was culturally powerful Christianity that stood in the way of liberal secular progress in the West—not Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism, Druidism, etc.
And so, radical Enlightenment thinkers like Voltaire rallied his fellow secular soldiers with what would become the battle cry of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment: écrasez l’infâme, “destroy the infamous thing.” It was a cry directed, not against religion in general, but (as historian Peter Gay rightly notes) “against Christianity itself, against Christian dogma in all its forms, Christian institutions, Christian ethics, and the Christian view of man.”

Becasue that would put them on the same side as America (damn you beat me to it, bravo).
The liberals I spar with hate Christianity and don’t show it any more respect than Islam. I think that is the core problem. They’ve been around Christians and know how dangerous they are. They also have a sort of “mitigating circumstances” attitude toward most criminals. They work to hard at analyzing what, outside of the perp, motivated their actions and have a twisted “there but for circumstance go I” perception and then ignore the real world impact of what the person did. It is especially easy if they were not directly impacted.
They also are of relatively low character and have a bit of a “birds of a feather” attitude toward them. After all, plenty of them are of low enough character to key your car if you have a conservative political sticker on your car.
Both ideologies are elitist and fascist.
Because their entire purpose and philosophy is to hate America, Capitalism and Western values. “Tolerance” is just a ruse to tear down American and Western society. They could care less if its replaced with a medieval, totalitarian theocracy like Islam.
Why isn’t NOW more critical?
Why aren’t women in general more critical?
Because any enemy of Christianity is a friend of theirs.
Because they’re both tools of Satan.
Because obama is one of them.
Let no crisis go unwasted. Marxist/Islamofascist FUBO & Co. thrives on crisis.
It’s because liberals fear and respect those who have no compunctions about killing them in cold blood. Hence, they genuflect to every despot, warlord, dictator, gangster, murderer, and terrorist.
Probably because they’re too busy feeding the lion, hoping it’ll eat them last.
cognitive dissonance.
Above all the contradictory things Islam kills for they have one ace-in-the-hole that has liberals/progressives in love with them:
They hate America.
They are (mostly) dark skinned, and they are anti-American.
It doesn’t matter that they are religious fanatics who keep women in virtual slavery. They can overlook that.
Because they’re both anti-American. Next question.
Because they don’t want to get blown up?
The reason they are all commonly against Christianity is because it is the one true religion and as:

“You are either for me or against me.”
