The FBI did not know that Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older Boston Marathon bombing suspect, took a six-month trip to Russia because his name was misspelled, according to a key Republican senator on national-security issues.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, said Monday that he had spoken to an assistant director at the FBI about the agency’s failure to monitor Tsarnaev after interviewing him in 2011 following a tip from the Russian government that he could be dangerous. Late Friday, the FBI said it found nothing “derogatory” after that initial questioning.

This is what our top criminal investigation agency is now reduced to.

Spelling errors killed 4, maimed almost 190.

Yeah, right.. If that is really the case then our technology is the worst in the world - please! These folks either did not even look or they actually ignored the travel.. These folks are following the Obama rules of investigation.

Spelling errors - probably started in Head Start, then went to public education where they learned condoms, diversity, and mother Gaia.

It’s not as if the stingy taxpayers provided them with a $1,000 commputer to check similar spellings and aliases for known terror suspects.

Anyway, how many terrorists are smart enough to fool the US government?

I wonder how his name was misspelled. First name? Last name? Both? No excuse though, because it should have been standard practice to look for possible misspellings when searching records. As an historian, you had to be aware of the possibility that a person’s name was misspelled, and check all the possible letter combinations. Guess they don’t teach that at the FBI academy.

DHS is required to triple check all spelling of names of 80-year-old grandmothers who might be carrying a 30-year old pressure cooker.

They have never failed in their mission of not letting a grandmother get thru their vigilant hands without a thorough body cavity search by their Specialized Aged Gerontion Security division! [SAGS}

My grandfather said the same thing. He was in the Secret Service. Of course that was a hundred years ago, and J. Edgar had not yet taken over the FBI.

Didn't see your comment before I typed my comment. You're right. Hadn't even thought about the software programs that the government has. There is absolutely no excuse for this not being discovered. They probably never even looked.

Another good observation. What is so sad is that all of these flimsy excuses will satisfy the lemmings in the media and the low info voters.

Liberalism is a mental disorder.
