Bloomberg Says Interpretation of Constitution Will ‘Have to Change’ After Boston Bombing
http://politicker.com ^ | april 22, 2013 | Jill Colvin

Posted on 04/22/2013 5:34:44 PM PDT by lowbridge

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday the country’s interpretation of the Constitution will “have to change” to allow for greater security to stave off future attacks.

“The people who are worried about privacy have a legitimate worry,” Mr. Bloomberg said during a press conference in Midtown. “But we live in a complex word where you’re going to have to have a level of security greater than you did back in the olden days, if you will. And our laws and our interpretation of the Constitution, I think, have to change.”

Mr. Bloomberg, who has come under fire for the N.Y.P.D.’s monitoring of Muslim communities and other aggressive tactics, said the rest of the country needs to learn from the attacks.

“Look, we live in a very dangerous world. We know there are people who want to take away our freedoms. New Yorkers probably know that as much if not more than anybody else after the terrible tragedy of 9/11,” he said.

“We have to understand that in the world going forward, we’re going to have more cameras and that kind of stuff. That’s good in some sense, but it’s different from what we are used to,” he said.

The mayor pointed to the gun debate and noted the courts have allowed for increasingly stringent regulations in response to ever-more powerful weapons.

“Clearly the Supreme Court has recognized that you have to have different interpretations of the Second Amendment and what it applies to and reasonable gun laws … Here we’re going to to have to live with reasonable levels of security,” he said, pointing to the use of magnetometers to catch weapons in city schools.

Hey napoleon bloomberapart. Why don’t we just throw the whole stupid thing out. After all, it is outdated. Nothing in there about prohibiting sodas larger than 16oz, nothing about max salt intake, nothing about banishing evil tobacco. You’re so brilliant maybe you could just write the new one. Asshat.

The "do-gooder" Socialists just can't do enough to try to deprive us of our unalienable, God-given rights and liberties. Something about thsee people. Seems like liberty is painful to them. Astonishing really.

And yet, tyranny, not liberty, has been man's normal experience throughout history. America is a very exceptional place and experience. Man has difficulty dealing with such good it seems.

There can be no doubt that the anti-gun states are going to have to give up all concepts of privacy.

It's easy to see that only with a digital recorder built into the sinus cavities in your head will it be possible to exist there. Every minute has to be covered.

Frankly I prefer personal ownership of firearms.

No, we must remove the restrictions placed upon law enforcement (mostly FBI) done after the 60’s, 70’s social revolution in which they had done such a good job infiltrating subversive organizations such as the Weather Underground SDS, KKK, etc. and essentially putting them out of business. DOJ separated the criminal and anti-terrorism operations not allowing them to even speak to one another, placed restriction on what kind of questions you can ask, how long you could maintain files on the bad guys, etc. Our LE and anti-terrorism people are fighting a battle with one hand tied behind them. We need to re-incarnate Hoover, IMO.

"Where is our Patrick Henry?" I guess the answer to your question has to be, everyone here on FR is a Patrick Henry, every time they declare opposition to tyrrany. And: If Godwin will give me a pass this one time, I only wish to ask, what is the difference between what Bloomberg is advocating and what Hitler would say to an entire world? "Admit that you don't have these rights you cling to, and we -- I -- will keep you safe. Not as free, but safe."

By way of contrast, consider this; note the date.

"We're at war with Islam.
"We're gonna be at war for the next 30 years; we're afraid to call them muslim islamic terrorists. We'll call them anything but --because we don't want to alienate muslim countries.

"That's ridiculous!

"Of course the vast majority of muslims --there are a billion, four hundred million -- are not terrorists, but there are hundreds of million who are!

They want to kill every Christian, every Jew, every Hindu who won't convert.
And we ought to put that on the table.

Bloomberg is a damn Hitler wannabe. We need protection more from our government and what they want to become, than from terrorists. We can survive acts of terror from foreignors that affect a few within our vast population. We cannot survive a terror campaign from our “leaders” that enslave the entirety of or vast population. We have the Constitution because we were fleeing tyranny. Bloomberg seeks to remove that barrier that protects us from the likes of him.

I hope the interpretation of our Constitution will change. We have gone way too far along the “Living Constitution” route, and we need to return to “Original Intent”. Freedom of the Press includes the Internet, and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms includes semi-automatic firearms and silencers. However, if he wants to “interpret” away any more of our God-given rights as outlined under original intent, he’s going to need a new constitutional amendment - and he’s going to need to confiscate firearms first to push that through and to enforce it.

What "ever- more powerful weapons"? A so called modern "assault rifle" can't hold a candle compared to an 1870s 45-70 in terms of sheer power.

Indeed, the Constitution needs to be amended to allow We the People to establish Pressure Cooker Free Zones. We need tighter Pressure Cooker controls.

We need to prohibit pressure cooker sales at pressure cooker shows without better background checks. 90% of Americans agree with that!

We need to move right now to only allow pressure cookers with less capacity to be sold at all!

Our founding fathers didn't even use pressure cookers. Heck's bells, was the Franklin stove even invented in those days? If it was I'm sure Ben never envisioned pressure cookers.

Ask Bloomers where in the Bill of Rights does it even say: A well regulated Kitchen, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Pressure Cookers, shall not be infringed?

If it isn't there, we ought to be able to prohibit the manufacture and sale of them...period! Get Feinstein on it...now!

It would help if Bloomers would say something once in his lIfe to prove he's brighter than Biden.

Actually, the Constitution is/was working just fine. My problem is that the Police closed down the whole Boston city because of a possible terrorist running loose amongst us.

That was against the Constitution. If you look at the outcome, the savior was the Boston folks supplying the police with information about the terrorist so just how great was it to shut the city down - while defying the Constitution itself!

Hey Bloomturd - you don't go about having to change the country’s interpretation of the Constitution

Article V of the Constitution spells out the processes by which amendments can be proposed and ratified.

To Propose Amendments

•In the U.S. Congress, both the House of Representatives and the Senate approve by a two-thirds supermajority vote, a joint resolution amending the Constitution. Amendments so approved do not require the signature of the President of the United States and are sent directly to the states for ratification.
