URGENT REQUEST FOR FLORIDA REGARDING SB58 American Laws for American Courts

We are on the cusp of nearly suffering an unexpected setback in Florida.

For reasons unknown, SB58, American Laws for American Courts, did NOT make it on the agenda for the Senate Rules Committee for next week. This was unexpected. The bill passed overwhelmingly in the House last week and has made it through three previous committees in the Senate.

This situation is unacceptable, but all is not lost--IF WE ACT QUICKLY AND DECISIVELY.

We need as many emails and phone calls as possible to go into 3 key senators from Florida and across America starting FIRST THING Monday morning if possible--and continuously through the end of the day Wednesday.

We need everyone to call the capitol offices AND the district offices of these 3 senators AND to email them as well at the emails given below. It is very important that everyone call BOTH offices for each senator AND email them as well.

There are reports that one member of the Senate leadership reported receiving 300 phone calls in OPPOSITION to SB58 last week. We need to show that there is a lot more support for SB58 than there is opposition. You are respectfully requesting the Senate President do just that since the Rules Committee is not scheduled to meet again in the 2013 Legislative session after this week’s scheduled meeting.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: 1. PLEASE MAKE CALLS AND SEND EMAILS TO FLORIDA SENATE LEADERS AT BOTH THEIR SENATE AND DISTRICT OFFICES URGING THEM TO BRING SB58 UP FOR A SENATE VOTE:

REQUEST THAT: “PLEASE MAKE SURE SB58, APPLICATION OF FOREIGN LAW IN CERTAIN CASES, IS HEARD AND VOTED ON THE FLOOR OF THE SENATE BEFORE THIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION ENDS.”

WHY THIS LEGISLATION IS NEEDED:

House Sponsor of companion BILL HB351, Rep. Larry Metz, in his message issued following approval by the Florida House on April 18, 2013 said: This bill makes protection of fundamental constitutional rights the gold standard for deciding any request to apply foreign law. If a request to apply foreign law is denied, the parties would be free to litigate their disputes under Florida law.

Express, respectfully, but forcefully, that you are disappointed and outraged that SB58 by Senator Alan Hays has not made it onto the agenda for the Rules Committee to have an opportunity to make it to the floor for an up or down vote.

Last year, 11th hour shenanigans derailed the effort to pass American Laws for American Courts in Florida. Make sure that the Senate leadership in Florida knows that you will not stand for a repeat of past failures to pass this important legislation, which recently was signed into law in another state (Oklahoma), bringing the total to 5 states thus far.

Senator John Thrasher District Office: (904) 287-4222 Tallahassee Office: (850) 487-5006 http://thrasher.john.web@flsenate.gov

Senator Don Gaetz District Offices: (850) 897-5747 (850) 747-5856 Tallahassee Office: (850) 487-5001 http://gaetz.don.web@flsenate.gov

Thank you for your support. PLEASE SHARE THIS MESSAGE WITH ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES.

We can do better than the 300 phone calls to one person who has put the pressure on to stop this bill.. If you do not want Shariah or other foreign law in our Florida Court Rooms then make contact now.

Not so itsahoot.

American Laws for American Courts is NOT the same as the law passed in Oklahoma 3 years ago.

It IS the same as the law signed in Oklahoma 2 weeks ago.
