It's about more than that. Honestly, I think we are to some extent feeling the same things that led people to become alcoholics and give up hope in the USSR.
There's been a loss of purpose, and a loss of the hope that comes from thinking you have the power to change your own situation. When the media doesn't tell the truth, when those in power treat those who have achieved as the problem rather than the solution, when people who have delayed gratification for years to have a better life find themselves not much or no better off than those who made no such effort, there is a grand disillusionment. We are living in a time of great demoralization. Ironically, or maybe not so ironically, demoralization was one of the most powerful tools of the politburo.

This is how I feel — increasingly demoralized. Hubby and I have worked hard and saved all our lives ...never spent our wad — just invested in kids’ education if anything. Now we stand, always getting into debt, work just SUCKS all the time ... can never get ahead — and know we never will be. It IS demoralizing. It makes me want to just leave this society — go live and work the land — get away from the majority — live some different values, among different people.
I’m tired of the elitist snobs. I’m tired of the lazy, criminal louts. I’m tired of the vindictive non-caring folks and our superficial culture — I want a saner, more compassionate, common sense lifestyle. Knocking ourselves out for luxury and to “keep up” with the Jones’s isn’t cutting it ... they take it all from you anyway. I just want to live my life out simply with the ones I love ... I’m nearing 50 myself.
I've come to believe those who say this has been done to us on purpose to achieve those very results.
Your post was worth the previous 70.
