An official told the New York Times that the Department of Homeland Security halted at least temporarily the application after the FBI interview of Tamerlan Tsarnaev was discovered in a routine background check.
It had been previously reported that the application might have been held up because of a domestic abuse incident.
Federal law enforcement officials said on Friday that the FBI interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev in January 2011 at the request of Russian authorities, who suspected that he had ties to Chechen terrorists.
Investigators were turning their attention to the time Tamerlan Tsarnaev spent in Dagestan in 2012. Kevin R. Brock, a former senior FBI and counterterrorism official, said: Its a key thread for investigators and the intelligence community to pull on.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a 26-year-old ethnic Chechen and one of two brothers suspected of carrying out Mondays twin bombings at the Boston Marathon, died early on Friday after a shoot-out with police.

I agree. Whatever happened (and the FBI looks bad anyway you look at it) the govt. is going to multiply its anti-constitution policies against America.
“Is there a box for religion on those immigration forms, one has to wonder...”
Not all that difficult of a wonder, as such a question would be a violation of the First Amendment,

You’re believing what the police are saying. He wasn’t dragged through the streets of Boston. I don’t even believe he was run over. Police want to blame the death on the brother.
He has to have been a citizen. He was registered to vote.
Or is that a can of worms that not supposed to be opened?
And yet allowed to stay here. Pathetic! The blood of innocent Americans are on this administration.
They got asylum because they were being persecuted for being Islamist terrorists.
As I recall, reputed to have been responsible for killing one of every twenty people on the planet at the time.
Because the application, which was rejected, was for citizenship, not stay visa. He was already a “permanent” resident, so naturalization rejection meant that he would not be a citizen, but he would still remain permanent resident.
What should have happened was that his green card should have been revoked as soon as the FBI investigation began. I can guess that the FBI screwed up the investigation, so they left him alone. The record remained, thus his naturalization rejection.
Now that we know they are part of a 12 man cell, the brother probably knew that he could not let his other brother be taken alive. They probably had standing agreements to not let each other be taken alive. The one they do have alive shot his own throat so he could not talk. They are hiding a lot of info. Since we have loose WMD now in Libya and Syria, we need that info.
Anyone in ICE or the Fed govt should know that Chechnya is a muslim area, without it being marked off in a box.

Could you provide further information on his voting registration?
