Rundown is that the lack of payments from insurers and Medicare is causing doctors to leave the island and leaving residents in a serious situation where there are not enough doctors to provide services.

They are just seeing the advance front of Obama Care, maybe they can pick up the crumbs of all the Doctors fleeing their practices instead of dealing with all the new intrusive rules and requirements to get a pittance in return.
They should be going to Costa Rica, per Dr. Vliet.
when I worked up in Canada in the early 80’s, Docs used to come down here for part of the year to earn a living that would cover their expenses (Health Canada limited what they could make- but not their expenses).
Today, I’d not be surprised to see US docs flee to Canada at this rate!

Doctors generally only have samples. In Florida, if I get a procedure in the office, I have to buy my own drugs ahead of time.
My sister who is a nurse in upstate NY tells the story of the hospital ER doc who lives in PR and commutes by plane to his 2 weeks on 2 weeks off hospital job.
My understanding is that malpractice insurance is quite high as well, in the tens of thousands of dollars peryear range.
No kidding. I don’t know how far Illinois is behind in Medicaid payments to health care providers, but I do know it’s been a huge problem for quite some time. The providers (at least here locally) generally seem to respond by grossly overtreating moderate health problems — IF you can get in.
