'A moment of silence was observed at the Emirates Stadium before kickoff in Arsenal's match against Everton to mourn the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy as well as Monday's bombing of the Boston Marathon.

Three people, including eight-year-old child Martin Richard, were killed in Massachusetts after explosions at the event's finishing line. Players for both Arsenal and Everton wore black armbands to honor the dead and more than 150 others who were injured in the blasts.

The attack came coincidentally on the same day, April 15, as 96 fans were killed at Sheffield Wednesday's ground in 1989, with tributes having been held across the weekend's matches and a special service at Anfield.'

The Police failed to control entry to the stadium. They opened a gate, which was normally closed to allow the pressure at the front of the stadium to be alleviated. Unfortunately that gate led spectators into two pens of stands that were already full. The pressure of the fans who were in the front of the stadium pushing in and could not see what lay in front of them, caused a barrier to fail and fans were piled on top of each other causing them to suffocate. Some fans were trampled to death in the ensuing panic trying to escape. This led to all English football stadiums to be refitted as “all seater” stadiums eliminating standing room only sections.
